He started with why Bethlehem was the birthplace: It is within the Promised Land as part of the inheritance to Judah and is where Ruth met Boaz, her Kinsman-Redeemer. It is also the birthplace of King David and was predicted in Micah 5:2 as the birthplace of God's Eternal King.
As to why the Virgin Mary was His mother, to take the tragedy of the Fall to the triumph of the Redeemer's birth through a woman. Also, Mary was a descendant of King David, fulfilled the prophecy in Isaiah 7:14 on the virgin birth and she was willing to participate in the miracle birth of Jesus ("May Your word to me be fulfilled" Luke 1:38b)
Then, God entrusted the greatest message into the hands of ordinary people, like the Shepherds. They were willing to hurry off and tell the good news; and when they saw the baby Jesus, they worshipped! In the same way, we can "Go", "Tell" and "Glorify and Praise God"
